A fire at American Veterans Post 511 in Staunton has ravaged the interior of the building and left three adjacent businesses smoke-damaged.Investigators believe an electrical fire started in the ceiling where it might not have been noticed at first by the occupants, who closed the building around 9 p.m., Staunton Fire Chief Scott Garber said,
Calls from passersby reported the fire at The AmVet Post 511 off West Beverley Street around 9:30 Friday night. Multiple companies arrived on the scene within five minutes, according to Staunton Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Marshal Perry Weller.
"The fire had already been burning for quite a while," Weller said.
Augusta County, Verona and Swoope fire companies as well as Staunton's had the blaze under control within ten minutes, but it had already caused extensive damage before they arrived.
