Helping Honduras Kids

Last week I was taken to a small elementary school in La Ceiba, Honduras. Precariously straddling the side of a mountain, this little school--like every school back home--promises the hope for a better future to the kids inside. The difference is not just in the buildings: the biggest difference is in what a future without education means.
The school is called the Jungle School. I was told on the way there that many of the kids have to walk across a river to get to school, then back across to go home. This didn't really hit me until I actually saw the river, which is not some stream to scoff at. When I asked a few of the kids where they lived, they would point off into the distance at the mountains. No towns, villages, or houses to see. According to the website , some of these kids have to walk 2-3 hours a day to make the roundtrip to school, and all of these kids are between kindergarten and seventh grade.
These are the lucky ones. They have the opportunity to go to school, and that opportunity exists because of the people that dedicate themselves to helping them succeed through volunteering and donating to David and his projects.
60% of Honduran people live at or below the poverty line, and the country has a reputation for having high crime rates. Many kids have to drop out of school early so they can get jobs to help support their families. The Jungle School and projects like it aim to change the path society has carved for these kids. Funding is entirely private, entirely altruistic.
