Jessica Atkins is an awesome mom to two amazing kids, she is a loving wife, she's an inspired midwife, a hilarious best friend, and a compassionate doula....AND she needs your organ or your cash or both. Pronto!
Here's the scoop. Last January she got the flu and she didn't recover quickly, which is unusual for someone who shops at Whole Foods, she ultimately ended up in the hospital. During that stay, Jessica discovered that she was in kidney failure! WHAT?! She went home and after several weeks of denial, disbelief, and probiotics, it finally sunk in what "kidney failure" actually means. The doctors talked to her about all sorts of crazy things, like, dialysis, organ donation, and kidney transplants (Oh MY!). Since that time, she has tried to continue working as usual, ignoring all the subtle signs that things were changing. She continued her homebirth practice in the Central Texas area and her doula training workshops. Over the course of a year, she's had to scale back her dream job and life's passion, to finally admitting that her weak body is no longer capable of supporting her work. With a broken heart, and some stupid kidneys, she has had to hand over her midwifery practice and to stop training doulas. As a result, the Atkins family has gone from a two income family, to a one income family and have had to add some very expensive medical costs(it is $70,000 a month for dialyses, her insurance only covers 80%!) they are in a really tough spot financially, and facing huge medical bills for the second year. Not to mention the costs for the kidney donor. The expenses are just going to keep adding up with no end in sight.
She has been supporting families across the country for over 25 years and she needs our help now. This is our time to show her how much we love her and appreciate what she has done for others.
