Clipper Round the World Race 2017

The Clipper Round the World Race is... well, it's unlike anything out there.  It is unique.  Founded by a legendary figure in the sailing world, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, The Clipper Race is an amateur race, for adventuresome individuals like me for whom normal just doesn't cut it.  It's 11 months of training and racing accross oceans, around continants, all for one reason: because it's there!

Composed of Stages, the sailors and yachts get a break after completing each leg of the race, to repair, recouperate, and to decompress.  Life at sea is tough. It's grueling, and it is relentless.

It takes everything one has to compete: mental and physical strength, support, and an attitude that looks challenges in the eye and says, "Game on!"   Spanning the globe, The Race will take me from the UK to Brazil, South Africa, Australia, China, the West and East Coasts of the US, and back to the UK.  It will span nearly a year of sailing, and 40,000 nautical miles.  From cold North Atlantic autumn storms, to the perilous Southern Ocean, this race will change who I am, and give me so much more than just miles on a logbook, or a good story to tell.

This organisation takes amateur sailors and puts them with professional skippers who will mentor them throughout the race.  "From Day One you will build teams, learn the ropes, cook, clean and race. On top of that you’ll learn the basics of yacht maintenance and management, racing tactics, survival at sea and weather routing. Above all, the most important skill you’ll learn is being part of a multi-disciplined, high performance team that will function in every condition that Mother Nature can throw at it."

As the site says, The Clipper Race is"an unparalleled challenge where taxi drivers rub shoulders with chief executives, vicars mix with housewives, students work alongside bankers, and engineers team up with rugby players."

The money that is raised from this campaign goes directly to the cost of participating.  There is no gravy, no padding, nothing.  Because of the dangerous nature of the event, safety training  takes place well in advance of the event.  And to participate at all, candidates must complete all four rounds, either in the Solent, UK or in Sydney, Australia.

Most recently, this event saw a Canadian, Eric Holden  of Vancouver, lead Henri-Lloyd to victory in the 2013-14 edition of the race.  Later, he was named SailCanada's Sailor of the Month three months in four (April, May, and July), and then after the win in the Race, SailCanada Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.  At the ceremony, Holden annouced the establishment of an all Canadian  offshore racing initative, Canadian Ocean Racing , with the goal "to really inspire fellow Canadian sailors to dream big about offshore racing."

I applied to the Aspiring Offshore Athletes program, but the competition was fierce and I didn't make the cut.  They implored me to continue to add to my miles and experience so I've put out the call to crew on several races around the East Coast, including the Lake Ontario Offshore Racing  calendar, the Marblehead to Halifax Race  and the VanIsle360  (which is a circumnavigtion of Vancouver Island).

I am asking you, my friends, your friends, my family and yours to help me get to the Clipper in 2017. Please consider donating.

And keep a lookout here for more information as my campaign proceeds.  I intend to post some video with more specific information.

 Thank you.
