Sector Maná Rises

Donation protected
Puerto Rico’s road to recovery is just beginning. Full recovery will require a collective effort, spanning from federal, state, and local governments; to the private and public sectors; to community organizations and private citizens. That is why Puerto Rico Stands (previously PR Rising - Maryland) is spearheading efforts to work with a local community to assist in these efforts.

We will be focusing our efforts in the long-term projects that will improve public health, quality of life and infrastructure. Our team includes physicians, public health practitioners, engineers and other professionals volunteering their time and talents. Specific projects include developing communication technologies that do not require internet access, linking medical and grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico to communities in need, and providing sustainable ways for community capacity building.

On this last initiative, we have partnered with Sector Maná, a local community in Barranquitas in the path of the eye of the hurricane. We are collaborating with community leaders and have conducted a preliminary needs assessment to help the community from within. Our first capacity building event will take place January 5th, the eve of Three Kings Day. During this event, we will deliver supplies, health education, mental health services, warm food, music, gifts for children, and identify long-term projects alongside members of the community.

Alongside local community leaders, we have identified the following immediate issues we will assist with: lack of power and running water; water-borne illnesses; mosquito-borne illnesses; lack of shade/exposure to excess sunlight; houses without roofs; acute illnesses; poor hygiene; and feeding children and the elderly.  Donations will be delivered in-person January 5th and thereon out, as we work in efforts to rebuild.

We will also be collecting monetary donations to help in rebuilding houses, purchasing propane gas tanks for portable stovetops, and providing communication technologies to help with lack of internet access.

The holiday season is one of joy, laughter, hope, and giving. As you consider ways to help the less fortunate, consider donating money or goods to those in need in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico will take a long time to rebuild, but if we start small and scale up, anything is possible. Thank you for your assistance during this time.
