Shoes for the Children in India

Donation protected
Dozens of deaths have been reported in India as pre-monsoon temperatures soared to 115 degrees in recent days.  Triple-digit temperatures have been reported all over the country's southern states as west winds prevail in areas like Bhubaneswar and Kolkata, preventing sea breezes from relieving coastal cities from stifling heat along the Bay of Bengal.  The heat wave was responsible for at least 111 deaths through Saturday in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.  These temperatures will continue to rise until the summer rains arrive on the southwesterly monsoon, but those rains are not expected to arrive until around June 1.

Thousands of children, who attend the New Life Evangelistic Center-India schools, are coming to school with bare feet. The dirt and paved roads are very hot and the children face many problems due to the the lack of shoes.  These children do not have the option to stay in the air-conditioned indoors because they live in huts, tents or are homeless.

Pastor Paparao and NLEC want to help these little children with sandals.  Each pair costs around $5 US dollars.  We would like to provide 1000 pairs of sandals for 1000 children, however, it would be a huge blessing if we can provide sandals to all 6000 children.

Brutal Heat Wave Kills More Than 100 in India

India’s pre-monsoon heat reaches dangerous levels

NLEC India's Director, Pastor Paparao, started with one small school, which housed 17 children. Since that humble beginning, the number of schools Pastor Paparao built, all with donated funds, grew to 25 in and around the Kakinada area of the state of Andhra Pradesh. These 25 schools became an “education home” to more than 10,000 children who come from homeless, low-income or untouchable families. This life-giving education is free to each student.

If these “free” schools were not provided, these these disadvantaged children would receive no education at all, thus extending the vicious cycle of extreme poverty. Fifty-nine million Indian children between the ages of 6 to 14 do not attend school and thus receive no education. Despite many promises by the Indian government, education in this country is far from a priority. Statistics show that India is home to 13 million child laborers and at least 18 million street children.

NLEC India has a goal of establishing 100 schools, which will educate at least 25,000 children. However, financial short falls force the closure of 10 schools. We are currently running 15 schools where more than 6000 childen are receiving free eduction.

New Life for Students -
provides for a student’s school fees & uniforms, meals, medicine, and transportation for one school year.  NLEC-India provides education for children of homeless, low income or untouchable families.  They receive free education from LKG (preschool) to 10th grade standard.  Unless these children have a sponsor, their families do not have the finances to continue their education through High School (11th and 12th grade).  To find out more about New Life for Students and India's education system, click here .
