Meet Yasin, a 15 year old teenager who likes to swim, ride his bike, listen to music, play games, go skiing, watch YouTube videos and has a quirky sense of humour. This little boy went from running, to using a walker and now is confined to a wheelchair in a matter of 10 years. He is not affected cognitively and understands exactly what is happening to his body physically, but has no control of it. Yasin just wants to be normal and do everything else that his family and friends are participating in, but these changes to his body are causing some obstacles.

Yasin suffers from a rare disease called Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). This condition is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. It’s progressive like a cancer which slowly eats away at his body leaving family and friends feeling helpless. The worse part is that there is no cure and it is slowly moving from his legs upwards. Yasin also suffers from a heart condition and scoliosis which is the curvature of the spine. There is nothing we can do to help him.
Unfortunately our medical expenses don't end either as his condition progresses, his needs are increasing and changing on an ongoing bases, sometimes without notice. This fund helps us provide and supplement for his ongoing changes. Every penny is used towards Yasin only, to help improve his quality of life by purchasing required equipment like annual AFOs, specialized shoes, accessible clothing and more.
Signs and Symptoms of FA * loss of coordination (ataxia) in the arms and legs * fatigue - energy deprivation and muscle loss * vision impairment, hearing loss, and slurred speech * aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine) * diabetes mellitus (insulin- dependent, in most cases) * a serious heart condition (enlarged heart - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared our story or helped in some form or the other. With your help we have been able to get a lot of things done. We have renovated Yasin’s bathroom, paved our driveway so he can go outside safely, bought a used accessible van, a commode for the bathroom and a used porch lift that allows him the ability to safely enter and exit our home independently. Most importantly, he has been able to participate in clinical trials at the Children's hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) which gives us all hope. Without hope, we have nothing!
