The Garden Hen is an Urban Education Chicken Business!
The Garden Hen (Nicole) and Farmer Mike love to educate folks on urban chicken raising and the benefits from it… They are commissioned by people to build beautiful custom coops in backyards all over Houston and surrounding areas. Most anyone can build a coop, but it’s the learning curve most people are nervous about. Well, here come the perfect couple! The Garden Hen will come in design your coop, build it, find your flock, and walk hand & hand with you during your new journey. Their all natural approach is fun, easy, and rewarding!
The other half of their business is Project Life Cycle.
PLC is a hatching program done with elementary level students. TGH and Farmer Mike come to your classroom with the most innovative, and educational hatching program out there! They setup a state of the art Brinsea incubators, fertile eggs, and all tools needed for the hatch. During the incubation process there are various live demonstrations TGH and Farmer Mike provide. One is their very unique “egg candling” demo which teaches the students about looking for viability and which eggs are forming properly. Another demo is their “chef scramble” demo with a local chef. The chef will use TGH’s fresh farm eggs, maybe a veggie or two, and make a big batch of scrambled eggs for a tasting. There is an education about your eggs, where they come from, and the characteristics of a fresh egg. The chef also gives a few cooking pointers for the students. The third demo is called, “house of hens”… This is so much fun, TGH will bring out a real chicken coop with an assortment of fully grown hens and give a demo about urban chicken raising. This is a very interactive demo which lets the kids touch a large hen, notice the different features of each hen, and have a great Q&A on chickens.

All the money donated will go to TGH and PLC for new low-income schools that will benefit from this great program. Last year, TGH provided 42 live demos/incubation projects with 60% of those fully sponsored by individuals or companies.
In the past three years they have completed over 170 demos/incubation projects for Houston ISD, Cy Fair ISD, Humble ISD, Bellaire ISD, and various private schools.
