Two years ago I received this e-mail... I’d been searching for my daughter, Mariko, for over twenty years, and had all but given up hope I would ever get to see her again. Mariko had come across my e-mail address on some documents issued to her mother by then-US ambassador to Japan, Walter Mondale, on behalf of the State Department. They had been hidden away in a dresser for over two decades. Now my daughter had found me.
We've connected since then, re-establishing our relationship over email and Skype. But what we both want, more than anything, is a face-to-face reunion. I think about the moment I’ll see my daughter again--that moment in the airport terminal when I pick her out of a crowd, I see her face, and we hug.
I'll be 50 years old in June and Mariko is 27. We’ve already lost so much time, but we know that special moment in the airport terminal will make up for all that. I’ve been working toward this goal, saving money and sharing my story for two years. I'm almost there, but it’s time for me to put all pride aside, and ask for help. Will you help me make this pinnacle moment a reality for me and my daughter?
