Out of the Mold and Onto the Street

A bedroom for 3 children, dripping water, black mold...

A hardworking family with 7 children, one disabled with a serious medical condition, living in squalor in an unmaintained rental apartment filled with black mold – and then, they receive an eviction notice.

Eviction letter...it's in Hebrew, this is in Israel...

This is the situation of my friends & neighbors. They have been living in their apartment for seven years. All children at home. One child is sick, denied disablity status, costing thousands each month in medical visits and medication costs, ompletely dependent on her parents for support, including specialist doctors who aren’t covered by "national" insurance.

Doctor bill for specialist, 1,035.  Seeing a specialist can take 6 months...or you pay for a private visit out of pocket...

Father has a good job, Baruch Hashem, but feeding a family of 9, plus paying doctors’ bills, medication bills, and rent and utilities was ALREADY bleeding him dry.  Following the eviction notice, he finds rents in the area having risen 35%.  His salary did not rise 35%, and the medical bills already left him with crushing debt.

Mom is desperately searching for a job – the last offer she had was paying the equivalent of $6 an hour, and that doesn't include transportation costs to/from the job. Oh, she has a Master's degree, but nobody want's over-50 workers anymore.

This is a month of medicine for the sick daughter...  All generics, but the co-pay is crushing.  Without it, screaming pain and bedridden.  With it, no food money.

They have 4 weeks to pack up and get out while already being in debt from medical costs. But where can they go, rents have risen 35% and they are already not getting by?

There is a nearby new neighborhood with lower rents, but it's literally a construction zone... filled with dust, dirt and debris --- and one of the disabled daugther's problems is ASTHMA. From mold to dust...unfortunately this is not a good option.

All they need is enough supplemental income to make up the shortfall between what they are paying now for a rundown dump (& they are paying a high rent) and what they will need to pay to get a decent apartment in their current area with the number of rooms they need so every child has a bed!

This is a family known for their charity. In fact, they operate a website where kind & generous strangers send donations which are given to poor families for the Jewish holidays. I personally have been with Mom when she has given huge sums to a 30-something single mom of 4 whose husband beat her then walked out. These are truly charitable people who make an impact on the community.

Now THEY are in need. I’m appealing to you to help so they can rent an apartment in a healthy environment that is big enough for their needs. Again – they are able to pay the majority of the rent but with ongoing doctor and medicine costs can’t manage the last few hundred dollars every month. Their food bills are colossal and try as she has, Mom has not been able to cut out anything more. She only buys fruit, vegetables etc on sale. She stretches one chicken to feed them all, she even gets discarded fish bones from the fish store to cook.

Please – I appeal to you good people out there to help this family who think of others before themselves. They will be homeless, or else live in a place that will make their sick daughter even sicker. I personally vouch for them and yes, we have made a monthly commitment to support them. Everyone today struggles, but some struggle more than others. Whatever you can give will be gratefully accepted – you can make your tax-deductible donation through their organization – just check the box “housing”.

May G-d bless you all and may you always be in a position to give and never need to receive.
