This is Oliver, or as we like to call him at home - Ollie Bear! This little man has been by my side everyday for 6 months straight.
Oliver has been diagnosed with a level 4 heart murmur and severe dental disease, a deadly combination. In the beginning, Ollie's heart murmur caused him to have a heavy and persistent cough. He was unable to sleep most nights, we would stay up with him trying to keep him calm during these coughing spells.
During our first attempt to X-ray his heart he began to panic and entered one of these coughing fits. He was unable to breathe and turned purple. The vet quickly took him into another room where he was put on oxygen.
Shortly after this incident we spoke with a second vet, here he was put on 3 medications for his heart and cough. At this time, we were told that without being on any medication, Oliver would have had only 6 months to live. With his current medication he has about a year. It was explained to us that his dental disease can and will lead to congestive heart failure if nothing is done.
A few weeks after this visit Oliver experienced an awful infection. He developed some bad swelling under his eye. Fortunately, antibiotics helped him fight off this infection.
Right now, Oliver is a high risk for surgery and will not be allowed to undergo anesthesia without first seeing a cardiologist. The cardiologist will help our vet with the specific anesthesia requirements for our little boy so she can remove his teeth and his breast tumor! (We were also reassured that they will be able to better handle his fearful personality).
In addition, with the tests that will be done on Oliver to help with the anesthesia, they will also help get him on a better medication. This can add an extra 5-8 years to his life!
If we are unable to get him to a cardiologist, our Ollie Bear will continue to suffer and eventually lose his life to this disease. Please help us save him!
