Pillows for Patients/Capes for Kids

Donation protected
I'm raising money to make (with my mom's help!) over 100 colorful pillowcases and super hero capes for pediatric patients undergoing medical treatments and surgeries at Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado.  I have been the recipient more than once of a few of these cheerful pillowcases on my hospital bed (you get to take them home when you finally get out of the hospital).

Many people don't know that I have a rare genetic disease called Familial Adenamatous Polyposis - Gardner's Syndrome variant.  I have a defective gene that causes me to grow a large amount of cancerous polyps on my large and small intestines, along with a higher risk for other forms of cancer including liver, brain, and thyroid.  Unfortunately, many of my family members - cousins, aunts, uncles, and my great grandmother have passed away much too early from this disease.

When I was six, I had to have my large intestine removed, so that I wouldn't get colon cancer.  I've had three abdominal surgeries so far and have to have my small intestine checked for polyps every one to two years.  I'm really healthy now and thankful and I appreciate all the nice things nurses, doctors, and volunteers have done for me when I have been in the hospital, including getting a nice, soft, and colorful pillowcase on my hospital bed instead of a scratchy, white, ugly hospital pillowcase.  It seems so small, but when you have been in the hospital alot, you appreciate the little things around you that make you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

I'd really like to give back and pay it forward to help make and donate these cheerful pillowcases to other patients who I think will enjoy them as much as I have.  I'd like to make at least 100 pillowcases and super hero capes too for children battling various illnesses and diseases at Chilren's Hospital Colorado and Rocky Mountain Children's Hospital at PSL.  I know the pillowcases and super hero capes will go a long way to making a pediatric patient's day just a little brighter.
My mom and dad have seeded my project with $350 but I would like to raise more so I can make at least 100 pillowcases and 100 capes for patients.  I have enough money for about 35 pillowcases and 35 capes right now.  I hope you can help me reach my goal.

You can also come volunteer with me.  With my mom's help, I'll be cutting fabric, ironing fabric, and helping to sew the cases and capes so if you'd like to help, it's super easy and we welcome anyone who would like to volunteer to construct these.  Just contact me or my mom (most of you either have my contact info or my mom's).

As part of my Bar Mitzvah learning and training, I think it's important not only to give or raise money for charity, but to also volunteer so that I can connect physically with what acts of lovingkindness really are.  After my mom has shown me how to cut the fabric out for the pillowcases and capes and helped me sew them, I realized how much work this really is and it makes me even more thankful for the kind gestures the other pillowcase volunteers have done for me and hundreds and thousands of other patients.

Thank you for providing financial or volunteer support for this worthy cause!

With Gratitude,
