PhD funding to fight poverty/support Human rights

About My Campaign

I am seeking to generate funding to get me through at least first year of my PhD at the University of London.  Funding is essential to survival as a PhD student particularly when you plan on studying in London.  Even with working part time and taking out a loan as I plan to do I will still be unable to afford life in London without some external help. I cannot offer any incentives to fund me. All I can do is express my deep gratitude to anyone who finds themselves able to help, even a tiny bit, with my attempt to understand and fight poverty and injustice.

About Me
The more I have studied human rights the more questions I have wanted to ask. These questions have driven me to pursue a PhD in the hopes of finding some satisfying answers or, indeed, some betters questions.

Beyond human rights I have an academic interest in social policy, the politics of poverty and inequality and the political and economic system of neoliberalism. How these topics influence and are influenced by human rights discourse is of special interest to me and is the area in which I wish to conduct my research. My interest in these topics is not just academic but based on a wish to understand societal injustice and find the most effective ways of challenging it. Knowledge for its own sake is important but knowledge with a purpose to improve lives is, in my view, essential.

My drive to tackle social injustice in my career is long held but since I began working for a welfare rights charity in a deprived area of Glasgow it has come into sharper focus. Through this role I have seen first hand the deprivation in society and the rank inadequacies of the welfare system. I do not believe that the poverty and suffering I have seen is an inevitable part of society but a function of political and institutional priorities. I believe that the best way to tackle such injustices is first to understand them.

In summary, I have a long standing interest in the topic of human rights and social injustices which is reflected in my academic career and my work life. I have a passion for this work and a drive to continue to study it through a PhD programme.
