My name is Courtney and I am a Social Worker/Case Manager for clients with a mental health diagnosis at Perspectives Behavioral Health in Waterloo, IA. We offer a dayhabilitation program for clients who have been diagnosed with any type of mental illness.
According to the State of Iowa, Day Habilitation is assistance with acquisition, retention, or improvement in self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills. Day Habilitation activities and environments are designed to foster the acquisition of skills, appropriate behavior, greater independence, and personal choice. Services focus on enabling the individual to attain or maintain the individual’s maximum functional level. Services must enhance or support the individual’s:
♦ Intellectual functioning.
♦ Physical and emotional health and development.
♦ Language and communication development.
♦ Cognitive functioning.
♦ Socialization and community integration.
♦ Functional skill development.
♦ Behavior management.
♦ Responsibility and self-direction.
♦ Daily living activities.
♦ Self-advocacy skills.
♦ Mobility.
We offer Day Habilitation daily from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and provide Peer Support Groups, Overcoming Addiction Classes, Overcoming Depression Workshops, Art, Life Skills Classes, Relationship Issues Classes and many more services in addition to healthy breakfast and lunches each day.
A lot of our client population are homeless, on fixed incomes, and have very little funding sources. We have also began taking clients from the Waterloo Residential Facility and Womens Center for Change. Our goal is to assist these clients with basic skills to function or transition into the community and provide coping skills to deal with their mental illness.
We are raising funds to better assist our clients with groceries when needed, ID's, rental assistance at times, clothes, and personal items.
