Calling all hockey and figure skating fans! Our community has been fortunate to have had an ice rink with year-round ice since 2009. The Pierre Area Youth Skating Association was one of the first in South Dakota to operate 12 months every year. We love watching our skaters play during summer rec, fall and spring programs. Every skater benefited this past season with several hockey practices held at the PAYSA.
But now, our rink is in danger. Two of the four compressors have not been working correctly since 2011. If the remaining two compressors fail, that means the end of ice for the summer. Maybe even longer.
We need your help to raise nearly $25,000 to replace the compressors! If you are a current hockey or figure skating family, an alumni of the Oahe Capitals or Central South Dakota Skating Club or someone who just loves the sport, please consider donating. Every dollar counts.
In way of background, PAYSA is a non-profit organization, started several years ago by figure skating families passionate about their sport. Eventually those families grew out of the program and the financial and operations burden has essentially been carried on by one family for the last few years. About a year ago, another investor got involved to keep the rink operational until al long-term solution could be worked out. It quickly became apparent that operating an ice rink is no small task. On top of mounting costs, news came of the non-functioning compressors. Tough decisions may be ahead if those remaining compressors fail.
A group of dedicated volunteers is working with PAYSA to search for grant opportunities and plan other fundraisers. Watch for some exciting news about an event coming up in July! In the meantime, any assistance you can give via this Go Fund Me campaign is appreciated and will help keep our off-season skating opportunities alive.
