Pat Bellanger ~ Awanakwe, Waterwoman began her journey to the Spirit world April 2nd, Thursday at 7:52 pm. We had a Fullmoon fire at Little Earth of United Tribes, and offered tobacco and her sacred food. There will be a Memorial Service at the Minneapolis American Indian Center on Saturday night, April 4th at 7pm. On Sunday morning, April 5th, Awanakwe will be taken to Leech Lake, MN where another Memorial will be held and on Monday she will be laid to rest in Onigum, MN.
Awanakwe was one of our renowned Ogitchidaakwe. She has stood up for us since the beginning of the American Indian Movement.
Throughout her lifetime, she walked a road of resistance, fighting for rights and a better life for us all. She has travelled across the world to organize rallies, protests, takeovers and occupations. She testified in front of the United Nations on the genocide of indigenous people in the United States and was a part of the work to establish the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. She was co-founder of the International Treaty Council.
Pat also organized the first national conference on Native American Organ Transplants, which brought together traditional medicine people and healers with Western doctors and healthcare providers. Awanakwe helped create numerous schools and community programs and has served on the Board of Directors for the AIM Interpretive Center, the One Heart One Mind Interpretive Center, the Native American Community Clinic, the International Tribal Elders Services, and as Board Member Emeritus for the Rural Coalition.
Awanakwe deserves a farewell fitting her dedication to us. Please help us raise the $10,000 needed to pay for her burial and funeral expenses. Thank you for any assistance you can give.
