Pan Fantasy Steelband is a subset of the North York Inter-Community Youth Group - a non-profit organization which has been in existence for 29 years. The band was founded by a group of community-minded individuals who saw a need to guide and mentor youth living in the Jane-Finch Community. The band provided support as the youths developed important leadership skills through their involvement in the performing arts.
Jane-Finch is a community with a high proportion of youth of West Indian descent, some belonging to low-income families who reside in public housing. Pan Fantasy wanted to make a change in the Jane-Finch community. The goal was, and continues to be, to engage youth and for the youth to learn leadership skills through the performing arts. Over the years the band has grown from an intimate group of players to an impressive collective of vibrant musicians. Our focus continues to be (but not limited to) the youth in our community.
Hundreds of young people have had the opportunity to be involved in our program. Our goals are to continue to support our youth members in our community as well as to promote and preserve Caribbean culture. As mentors, our mature members play an important role in this process. Since we want to attract as many youth members as possible, there are no membership dues. Your support will always be appreciated.
Pan Fantasy performs at various public and private functions all year round and has also been involved in the annual Pan Alive competition since its inception. Over the past 10 Pan Alive competitions the band has placed first 5 times in 2005, 2006, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The band has also travelled to New York for their annual Panorama in 2013 and 2014 placing 4th and 5th respectively.
Pan Fantasy Steelband will be competing in the International Conference and Panorama competition in Port of Spain, Trinidad on August 9th, 2015. 30 bands from various parts of the world including 12 of Trinidad & Tobago's best will be competing to earn the title of 2015 ICP champions! To state that this is a HUGE undertaking is a gross understatement. The opportunity to represent Canada as one of the country's premier steelbands is not something that the band takes lightly. We are practicing hard each and every day to ensure that we do our best in representing the steelpan community in Toronto, as well as nationwide. The financial costs for such an undertaking are enormous, and we are appealing to our fan base and various communities for assistance in making this a reality.
