Funds for Down Syndrome Nigeria

Paceworking is a business network based in the UK organising conferences, business seminars and shows. The acronym and key message of Paceworking is 'P.A.C.E' - to Promote, Advertise, Connect and Empower through networking and business events. The year 2015 marks our 10th Anniversary and we are raising funds for the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria.

Mrs Rose Mordi set up the Down Syndrome Association Nigeria in 2001 to help children and adults with Down’s Syndrome. The Association became the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria in 2010 and has extended their work to other West African countries.

Down Syndrome (also called Trisomy 21) is a condition where extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops both mentally and physically. A regular person has 46 chromosomes but people with Down Syndrome have 47 chromosomes. Having an extra chromosome changes the way the brain and body develops, those with Down syndrome tend to have some degree of physical and intellectual disability and are also pre-disposed to congenital heart defects. Down syndrome is a lifelong condition, however due to advances in medical technology individuals with Down syndrome are living longer with a better quality of life.

The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation of children with Down syndrome, as well as parents, guardians, care givers and other interested stakeholders. Most of these children are neglected or abandoned by their parents and society on the basis of culture and myths that tend to stigmatise them and their family.
