The Ozark Shorts Film Projector Campaign

My name is Jack Truman. I am a filmmaker. And founder of OZARK SHORTS.

About Us – Ozark Shorts

OZARK SHORTS is a monthly free short film screening series of great international films from around the world.

As an award winning independent filmmaker, my films have had great success on the film festival circuit over the years, screening at over 300 film festivals around the world. As I was having this great success and experience, I wished that my hometown area could experience a taste artistically of the independent film world in a film festival style format. Nothing like this has ever been in my hometown area in the Ozarks. So I decided do it myself. And bring the world of short films to this small town rural area that covers a 4 state radius in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Everything with this monthly film festival is free. Free for filmmakers to submit and screen their films. Free and open to the public. Nobody pays for anything. This was created for anyone to see great independent short films the way they were meant to be seen without paying a cent.

Last month, we had our first free screening event in Lamar at the Lamar Library. This month, there are free screening events scheduled in 3 towns across the Ozarks. Next month, we already have 7 towns in small towns across the Ozarks that have booked free screening events! It's a great feeling as a filmmaker and an artist to see that here in these small towns in the Ozarks, where locals never get a chance to see true independent film, that there is such an interest in seeing original independent short films from around the world!

Most people around here have never even heard about a short film. When I explain it to locals, many respond by saying “What do you mean? Like a preview for a movie? Or a commercial?” They don't know that a short film is like a feature film. It's a complete movie. The only difference is that it's short. It can be as short as 3 minutes or as long as 40 minutes. So it's a great feeling artistically to give something like this back to the community where I came from, at no cost to anyone, while also educating people in this area back home about a style of film that they know nothing about.

People back home here in these small rural towns in the 4 state area need to be given the opportunity to see great independent films from around the world they would otherwise never get the opportunity to see. There is a great creative world of short filmmakers that want to share their art with the public and get their messages out. Everyone should have the chance to see great art without paying a cent.

Some towns that want to have free screening events have no type of a screen to see these short films as a group. That's what we need your help with.

What We Need – What the Money's For

We need a cheap projector that can connect to a laptop.

In order to bring the independent short film world to these small towns in the Ozarks, and let anyone see them at no cost, we need to provide a form of physical means for people at these local locations to view these movies as a group.

Free screening events take place at local libraries, senior citizen centers, churches and various organizations such as the Lions Club. While some locations have a screening method to show the films, many do not. Some places have a projector. Some places have TV's and DVD players. Some places have no method of screening. We want to bring short films to towns for anyone to see at no cost. So we need something that is portable that we can take to different locations to screen these short films to anyone and everyone.

The cheapest and the easiest thing to get would be a small portable projector that connects to a laptop.

We've been able to find several cheap projectors online for under 100 dollars. So with our fundraising goal of $75, we will be able to purchase a portable projector online and take it to all locations to screen short films anywhere! Inside or outside. On a wall or on a bedsheet. It doesn't matter. As long as we have a way to play these films to the public at no cost, the way they were intended to be seen, that's all that matters.

What's in it for me?

You will be helping local people in a small rural area in the Midwest have the opportunity to see a style of independent film and great short films from around the world that these locals would otherwise never get the opportunity to see.
What happens if you exceed your goal?

If we raise more money than is asked, we'll put the money to good use! It will be possible to buy a better quality projector, then we can begin buying additional equipment to make the free screenings better quality: a projector screen, sound equipment and more! If enough funds are exceeded, we can even branch out and have free screening events in more towns throughout the Midwest! But the primary goal here is just to get a cheap projector so we can have free screening events anywhere that people want to see great independent short films.
