The history of horseback riding is integral to our history, Open Trail's goal is to provide the largest repository of horse trails in the U.S. - and arm organizations that maintain and advocate for horse trails with essential data to fight for our National Treasure... The Open Trail.
History
Open Trail started as a small project 3 years ago where I could record and save the trails I ride in the local area... then a few friends had seen what I had and said "We need that!".
After talking with a number of trail associations I began to realize that Open Trail could be a huge benefit by recording and preserving our trail system through out the US, not only for future generations but also by providing real statistical data to the hard working people who have their boots on the ground and fight to keep trails maintained and open.
Open Trail was officially launched late February of 2014 and has recorded over 70,000 miles of trails with over 1000 members participating in 18 months and is growing every month with new trails and members. Visit www.opentrail.us to see the latest trails.
About the Founder
J.R. has been riding horses for most of his life and has a passion for riding trail with his horse Satara. He founded The Open Trail Project to provide a means to record horse trail maps across North America and and help preserve our national heritage, the "Open Trail".

Where we need your help
The goal we have set would allow Open Trial to invest in the tools and equipment we need to build out our mobile application (iPhone and Android) and provide support, equipment, and training to a number of trail associations around the US so they can map their local trails. In addition we will be proactive in providing education, preservation, and promotion of our National Trails for all by producing training materials for our members and trail partners.
