Hello!
My name is Dustin and I lost all of my hearing when I was 12 years in a baseball accident one summer. In 2001, my life flipped upside down and I underwent surgery to recieve one of the first Cochlear Implants in America for a young teenager for the chance to hear again. A year later, it was activated and I could hear again for the first time in a long time. It was one of the best experiences of my life and one of the most important. Since then, I have been able to live a "normal" life and have been given a chance to succeed at everything I've tried. Today, I am happily married, working hard as a laboratory manager for a large optical company, and simply living the life. The Cochlear device has changed my life in so many ways and I'll be forever grateful for it.
But with it comes a price. And that price is $10,000. This is the price of the latest Cochlear device that I am hoping to purchase. I currently have the "Nucleus Freedom" device that has been with me for many, many years. It has given me so much to be thankful for. It's allowed me to graduate college, land a good career, and meet so many awesome people. Unfortunaely, my current device is getting old and falling apart. It has cracked and I am holding it together with tape (Seriously!). The sound clarity has also dwindled significantly. It is inevitable that I will be forced to purchase a new hearing aid really soon.
So that brings me to why I am here. My insurance company has informed me that they will not cover ANY of the cost of the new hearing aid. So I'm left to foot the entire bill, which I must say is tough when I'm already struggling to pay my bills as it is. I am looking at getting a second, part time job to help cover the monthly payment I may inevitably require. I have never asked for help before in a financial sense, so this is tough for me. But I would appreicate any and all donations towards the purchase of my new hearing device, the "Nucleus 6". It would mean so much to my wife and I that cannot even begin to explain how am feeling as I type this. My life would be enhanced by this technology on such a level, I can only dream about it right now.
