Send Jon to Xian!

Hello, my name is Jon and I recently graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and minors in Sociology and Japanese. I've applied to  this six-credit (2 course) study abroad opportunity to China this Summer in order to receive my diploma. You're probably thinking:

"Why would you go to China to finish your Japanese minor?"

Well, one of the courses in the program focuses on traditions of Asian countries, dealing with historical contexts, and literary artistic expressions.  Therefore, I discussed this opportunity with my Japanese advisor, in which she informed me that she would be willing to substitute this course instead of the Japanese culture course I would need to complete my minor.  So, I decided to take the plunge and apply as this trip would serve as my first experience traveling outside of the country and the study broad experience I always wanted to have while in college.

I am still trying to raise money for the trip. which is set to take place in Xi'an, beginning May 21,  2015. The program is a total of 5 weeks and I will spend 4 weeks in Xi'an taking intensive Chinese language courses at Shaanxi Normal University.

In addition, I will also participate in excursions to sites within and around the city that highlight the religions and cultures of traditional China. These sites include the Terra Cotta Soldiers, the Great Mosque, the Temple of the Eight Immortals, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the sacred Daoist mountain Hua Shan.

The last week I will spend visiting Luoyang, Kaifeng, and Beijing. I will also  have the opportunity to visit Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Great Wall of China amongst other famous locations.Through my participation in these experiences, I am looking to boost my professional development, cultural awareness, and educational experience.

I am beyond excited to expand my knowledge about Chinese language and to experience immersing myself in a completely new and different environment.  I plan to pursue graduate study in Counseling and would like to one day establish my own practice working with special populations, particularly LGBTQIA+, racial, and ethnic communities. Going to Xi'an will give me insight on whether or not I would like to possibly practice in China as well as Japan (my original plan) in the future.

All donations would go to cover program costs and other expenses during my time in China.  Anything you are willing and able to provide would help and be most appreciated.

Take care,

-Jon
