A developer is planning to build a four story, 920-unit self-storage facility in our residential neighborhood of Tacoma, WA on S Lawrence St between S 18th and S 19th Streets. The property in question is part of a protective covenant that was established in 1945 to protect the residential character of this historical neighborhood, built during WWII at a time of great need. That need continues as Tacoma is experiencing a housing shortage today. Tearing down existing homes to put up a storage facility runs counter to the goals expressed by our City officials. Residents expressed their concerns as soon as they became aware. Unfortunately, City planners rubber-stamped this project and the protective covenant is the only thing now keeping it from moving forward.
Many nearby homeowners and the neighboring Gloria Dei Lutheran Church have expressed great concern about the proposed plans. Concerns include the towering size of the building in a residential neighborhood, the added commercial traffic and parking on neighborhood streets, crime, and adverse impact on property value. The church has large stained-glass windows that face the east and they rely on the morning sun to illuminate them. A four-story building would block the light and compromise their integrity. The developer was unsuccessful in getting neighborhood approval. Now, they have chosen to sue every homeowner and the church within the protective covenant in order to facilitate their plans.
We are a neighborhood of hard-working, tax-paying citizens who have been invested in the neighborhood for decades and want to keep our neighborhood a safe, welcoming place to live and raise families. We are asking you to please help us raise funds toward representing the covenant members in Court and other legal expenses as we fight for our neighborhood.
