My name is LA Virgil-Maldonado and I'm an author of My Book is My Story, a published journalist, a songwriter and publisher with ASCAP, a music reviewer,a television producer and now I'm in the fight for my life. I'm currently in treatment for brain cancer. I have what is termed an Oligodendroglioma Grade 11. Oligos make up 2 percent of all brain cancers and are very rare.
I had my first successsful brain surgery in November, 1999. At the time they removed eighty percent and I remained active but had my challenges and was told what remained was inoperable! More than a decade later with progress in technology on November 20th, 2014 exactly 15 years after my first diagnosis I underwent open brain surgery. The offical term is a craniotomy where I had to be awake for hours while they chisled and drilled through my skull. My first operation I was asleep and the reason I had to be awake this time is because the cancer was around my speech section and they didn't want me to awaken and be mute.
During the operation I cried, screamed, complained when I felt severe discomfort and more importantly I sang. Having survived the surgery and recently completed radiation which left me with no hair on top of my head, I only recently figured out what the burn marks were, I thought it was new hair growth(smile). I'm about to do chemotherapy and all of my co pays are adding up so I need your help so that I may continue to be a voice as an advocate in our fight for a cure and to pay my medical bills.
