Help Cian Fight Leukemia

Cian's "Keep Fighting" Fund

Cancer interrupted the path of Cian Nacar’s life during a time which should have been a celebration.

Cian was diagnosed with leukemia twelve days after her 21st birthday.

She’s a senior at UNLV and a member of the Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority. Her passions include; singing and dancing and is also a member of Under the Radar Dance Crew and Motu Nehenehe Polynesian Dancers.

Cian had a high fever and several large dark purple bruises all over her legs when she was rushed to the emergency room and then told she had leukemia.  She was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.  She didn’t have time to process everything when complications forced her into ICU.  She was hospitalized for over a month undergoing intensive chemo therapy.  Two weeks were spent in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit due to several complications including hemorrhages in her brain. She had an antenna inserted on the top of her head to monitor her brain, several blood transfusions, three IV polls with numerous infusion bags, two PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) lines in both arms with five ports at one time, while she was intubated and breathing through a machine. She suffered temporary memory loss, muscle fatigue, muscle loss and had to go through speech and physical therapy. Needless to say, it was a very trying and tumultuous time.  God’s grace, strong faith, continuous prayers and support from all our family and friends has helped her get through it all.

Cian is now getting treatment at the City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, CA. Travelling back and forth over an hour and half one way has proven to be a challenge.  She has also stayed at the Hope village rooms as an outpatient for weeks at a time.  She’s been battling this disease for over 6 months now with several hospitalizations and outpatient cycles of treatments, including daily blood draws, infusions of arsenic and chemo, bone marrow biopsies, lumbar puncture procedures with chemo and more… Her body has endured many painful procedures and side effects, but she is very hopeful and sees the light at the end of the tunnel.  She has fought through a lot and has come a long way.  She will be undergoing her last major round of chemo therapy soon and will then be on the road to recovery.  She’s considered high risk for relapse and recurrence so she will have to do years of follow up and maintenance.

Throughout all this, Cian has managed to be positive, strong and courageous. She keeps her spirits up and tackles each treatment as a necessary task to complete. In the beginning it was tough to plug in to social media and look at her cell phone where she could see all that she was missing. Now she makes it a point to attend as many events and social gatherings as she could in between her chemo therapy, regardless of what her body is going through.  She wants to feel as normal as possible and doesn’t want to be known as the girl with cancer.  She continues to have a sense of humor, laughs as much as possible, sings and dances and won’t let anyone or anything stop her.  She is more determined than ever to conquer this and “Live life…”

The journey has been difficult but Cian is amazing and a true fighter!  She will survive and overcome!

Thank you for your support in helping Cian, continue her fight… We are very appreciative and truly grateful!

Sincerely,
