On Valentine’s Day this year, a very close friend of ours was involved in a horrific car accident on their way to a speedskating competition. While in route to NW Indiana, they encountered blizzard like conditions, making travel extremely hazardous. During a whiteout on the road, the Richards family was hit from behind and sideswiped by a semi-tractor trailer. This accident destroyed the car and sent Colleen and her parents, Janet and Bill, to the hospital with serious injuries.
Colleen was extremely lucky to escape with only soreness, a concussion, whiplash, and multiple stitches to her face. If Colleen was sitting on the driver’s side in the backseat, or laying down to nap, she would have been killed on impact (that side is where the trunk was pushed into the backseat of the car). Her parents on the other hand haven’t been so lucky.
Her father Bill, suffered multiple broken bones causing tremendous pain and requiring extensive surgeries. After two weeks in the hospital, Bill has completed all surgeries and is now in a rehab facility, but isn’t expected to be home until Easter, at the earliest.
Her mother Janet, has suffered the most distressing injuries, including severe head trauma. Janet has had surgery for her jaw and skull fractures, but she remains in the ICU in a coma. The doctors have her connected to a feeding tube and ventilator, and at one point had a monitor inserted into her brain to keep an eye on the swelling. Since the brain swelling hasn’t subsided and they don’t know when she will wake up from the coma; there isn’t much more the ICU can do for Janet and they will soon move her to a specialized facility for long term care.
This family is very wonderful. They always have a positive attitude, and go above and beyond at anything they do. Due to this accident, the family is now facing financial hardship. Medical bills will be astronomically high, not to mention the day to day bills that need to be kept current while both parents are still recovering. We are doing everything we can think of to help out one of our own and ease their burden as much as possible. Things seem to be looking up, but their family has a long road ahead physically, mentally and financially. They are an important part of our family, and anything we can do to help would be great!
