Dear Friend of Ujima,

We are proud to announce that we successfully began our 38th Anniversary Season in September! Our first show of the season, The Submission by Jeff Talbott, was co-produced with Buffalo United Artists for Curtain Up! 2016. Audiences met us with great praise as we addressed issues that impact various segments of our community.  We are excited about our next production in collaboration with Drea d’Nur, The Spirit of Nina. This riveting multimedia musical and visual homage to Nina Simone will be performed on February 24, 2017 at Kleinhans Music Hall.

We look forward to moving into our new space as an anchor tenant at the old School 77 in 2017, upon completion of renovations. In the interim, we enjoy the opportunity to present shows in new ways.  As with El Hajj Malik by N.R. Davidson, our closing production of last season, we performed The Submission on Alleyway’s Main Street Cabaret stage. With plans to present in non-traditional settings in the near future, we will take the show to new audiences to whom the story will speak.  Ujima is currently engaged in weekly workshops as we re-create Free Fred Brown, a Just Transitions play, through improvisation by the company of the show.

Ujima has nurtured relationships with various organizations, with the shared goal of improving the quality of life of the entire community through outreach and positive change. Ujima serves as the cultural partner for PUSH Buffalo, including undertaking arts programming at 271 Grant Street. We are a key partner in the Crossroads Collective and an active member of NY Renews.  Earlier this year we participated in the rally to pass the NYS Climate and Community Protection Act in Albany. We continue to work in the interest of the general population as we recently sought and were granted a public hearing in response to National Fuel’s request for a rate hike.  We move forward to integrate and facilitate dialogue across Buffalo’s multicultural communities through “Plenty”, a year-long residency project with internationally known artist Nick Cave in partnership with Young Audiences of Western New York and CS1 Curatorial Projects. These relationships help us achieve our Vision offstage.

As a friend of Ujima, we ask you to support our Vision this season by making a contribution that will help us continue our work in the community.  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and much needed.  Unless otherwise specified, donations of $100 or more will be printed in our playbills throughout the production season.  On behalf of the company, we would like to thank you in advance for your continued support and commitment to Ujima Company, Inc.

Sincerely,
