I am the owner of the RI Kids Create Music School and I have just written a book, Beyond My Imagination . It is based on my experiences in teaching piano at after school programs and was written to encourage children to develop their talent for piano.
I have been teaching for ten years or so and have decided to open a school. I often had a waiting list for kids to get into the program. I have oersonally witnessed how children changed after taking piano lessons for just seven weeks! Children became more confident, disruptive children became more manageable, and troubled children became more calm and joyful.
As you may know, many of the schools have eliminated enrichment programs such as music from their curriculum in favor of holding kids more accountable for better performance on standardied tests. However, studies have shown that children who study music have better reading and math skills and perform better on standardized tests. They tend to not accept mediocrity within themselves and are better at completing tasks.
Children who are disruptive in class or have behavior problems that are unamanageable will change as a result of taking music lessons. They are more calm and may take an interest in music, especially if they have talent. They will become focused on learning how to play the instrument and will be challenged by learning more advanced music theory and skills.
Since music students have been shown to perform better on standardized tests, I will use the book to raise money for the school and attract students. There needs to be more of an awareness to parents that their children need a music education. Parents also need to know that there is hope for their problem child.
The math and problem solving skills of American children are much lower than many of the other developed countries overseas. It will take years for us to catch up, but we need to begin instituting changes now that we are aware of it.
I need money to engage in a marketing campaign, to go on book tours, to order books, to hold book signings and do public speaking engagements.
Once I have accumulated enough money froom the sales of the boos, I want to find a building for the music school. Since it is difficult to locate a building where people would not compalin about the noise, I would want a new building with all of the equipment for music education and performances.
