Midlands STEM Elects Board Members
November 14, 2014
(Winnsboro, SC) The parents of Midlands STEM Institute students, current teachers and staff, as well as current board members elected three new board members and reelected an incumbent on Friday November 14th. Three board members who helped open Midlands STEM Institute this fall did not seek reelection which opened the door for new leaders to emerge. Outgoing board members John Peoples, Thomasena Holloway and Joan Combie served the school well and brought different skills to the board. Peoples a retired federal worker, Holloway a business owner and Combie a scientist who owns a local business helped make history by opening the first public charter school in Fairfield County this past August.
Five candidates offered themselves up for service for the four open positions. The candidates included incumbent Wanda Carnes, a local real estate broker, Scott Spang a Vice President of Wells Fargo Advisors, Mike Moore a local attorney, Angela Stone an Information Technologist with the SC Department of Social Services and Heyward Mattox a Senior Inspector with Dennis Corporation.
Once the ballots were counted Heyward Mattox was the top vote getter with 64 votes, followed by Angela Stone with 59 votes, Wanda Carnes and Scott Spang with 57 votes and Mike Moore with 40 votes. As the top two vote getters Mattox and Stone will serve two year terms, Carnes and Spang will serve one year terms. The new board members will be sworn in at the Tuesday December 9th regularly scheduled board meeting and sit for their first board meeting on Tuesday January 20th 2015.
