Clean Water for Dominican Republic

Tax deductible
What would it feel like to not trust the water that comes out of your faucet? What if you didn’t even have a faucet to drink from? Too often, we take water for granted.

The communities surrounding Santiago, Dominican Republic are in dire need of access to potable water. The majority of the residents get drinking water from a source that looks clean, but is contaminated with life-threatening bacteria and parasites. Many of the children suffer with diarrhea and a variety of waterborne health problems as a result. 40% of all illnesses seen in clinics are associated with the water people drink.

The Rotary Club of Lafayette wants to help do something to change that for hundreds of residents near Santiago. Our Club is teaming up with an interdisciplinary group of local university students and faculty from agricultural economics, biology, engineering, food science and nursing, as well as a host Rotary Club in Las Canas, DR with the goal of installing 3 large water filtration systems near Santiago.
These systems would be placed at local schools where they could benefit the most people.

The water treatment systems will yield water that will consistently meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) standard for E. coli and other potable water indicators. This is a not a first time effort for Purdue’s team of experts. They successfully installed one of these systems in Las Canas, DR last year.

Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.

90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old. The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.

With your help we can make a critical difference in the Dominican Republic. We have a unique opportunity for a matching grant from Rotary International. Once we reach our final goal of $7,500 we will be able to access the remaining matching funds of $22,500. We are still $5,000 away from our goal. If we exceed our goal, we will dedicate those funds to additional clean water projects in the Dominican Republic. Every $1 you give today is being matched by $3 more until we reach our goal of $5,000. Doesn’t that sound great?!

100% of the funds raised will go directly to the project. Absolutely none of it will be used for travel or administration expenses of the project.

Water is one of the most basic necessities of life. You have the power right now to make a big difference for a person, a family, and a community.

Give water. Give life. Give now.
