Monica James is a 40-something Black transgender woman from the South Side of Chicago. She is a collective member at the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois, and Staff at both Howard Brown Health Center and Chicago House & Social Service Agency in the TransLife Center. She is also a fulltime student seeking her degree in Paralegal Studies.
Due to her work on criminalization of transgender women of color, Ms. James has been asked to speak to the United Nations next month in Geneva, Switzerland. She will speak both to her own experiences in the criminal legal system as well as national trends. Her testimony is hugely important to help the team of attorneys, activists, and policy-makers bring national attention to the violence facing transwomen of color in the U.S. in the name of "law enforcement."
