New Floors for Mom-Mom
Donation protected
Hi Everyone!
On July 21st, my grandmother (Mom-Mom) fell and broke her hip. She had surgery to repair it, and has been improving every day with physical and occupational therapy.
Now that Mom-Mom has completed her inpatient therapy and is home, there are a lot of changes that need to be made to accommodate her current limitations.
First and foremost, the floors will need to be redone to prevent any further trips or falls and to accommodate her walker now that she is able to move around the first floor. We ripped up the carpet ourselves, and the estimate for the needed repairs should be around $2500.
The house formerly had a bathroom on the first floor that was removed many years ago, and the plumbing capped. We were able to re-install the basics, but the powder room will still need safety rails added before it can be useful for her. We removed the old damaged walls and plan to replace them with sturdier panels to support the safety rails. The bathroom repairs should total around $2000.
Sassy and determined as ever, Mom-Mom has made incredible progress. As she improves with her physical therapy, her next goals include ditching the walker for a cane, and then conquering moving up and down short flights of stairs (up to 5 steps to begin).
Once she gets the green light for full staircases, we will install non-slip floor coverings on the stairs so that she can return to sleeping in her bedroom. The estimated total for adding the safety rail and non-slip floor covering to the stairs should be around $500-$1000.
We have all hands on deck to do as much of the needed upgrades ourselves and look forward to the challenge. It has been our experience, however, that every time we rip out old carpeting or damaged wall panels we find more repair projects waiting to be discovered. (Isn't that how all home repair adventures seem to go?)
For details on repair progress (both for Mom-Mom and the house!) please feel free to message me!
On behalf of the entire Custer family,
Thank you!
