Out of the Darkness - David Castro
On December 14, 2014 my family and I lost my best friend, Ernesto David Castro to suicide. He chose to take his own life instead of seeking help or turning to those that loved him, losing a battle with PTSD. He was a friend, a son and a brother in arms in the USMC and USAF. He will be sadly missed for years to come. He was my best friend for nearly 10 years. He was funny, caring, loving, and battled a dark road of PTSD after serving in the Armed Forces. He served 4.5 years active duty as a Lance Corporal in the USMC and then 5 years as a Senior Airman in the Air Force Reserves. In addition to his military service he helped take care of his mom, went to school at University of Texas at Arlington and then at the Universal Technical Institute. My family and I are raising money to be able to walk in the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention / Awareness walk put on by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention in honor of David. Please follow the link to our GoFundMe account for additional information and how to donate.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. The AFSP is bringing their walk to Dallas for the first time ever this year. My family and I feel compelled to participate in it to get his story out there, to find some healing and help fund an organization that might be able to help others in the future.
To allow myself and my family to participate in this all night (dusk til dawn) continuous walk, we have to raise $1000 each (total of $4000). I am asking your help to raise that money to sponsor David and to help fund the AFSP. We know times are tight and dollars are short. Anything can help. We know that love is not measured by the dollars in your wallet but by the love in your heart. So please, give what you can. Even a few dollars each can add up quickly. Please share this with as many people as you can. Share it on any social media you have (I only have facebook). You can donate anytime between now and April 24th. The walk is on April 25th. You may or may not have known David, but please consider donating if you have ever known anyone that has a battle with mental illness, PTSD or suicide. The AFSP is conducting research and prevention programs across the country.
We will be carrying a flag with all the names of the donators throughout the walk and posting throughout the night.
