Hi! Our names are Cole Spike and Johanna Lunn, and the two of us chose to take a Childhood Development class at the University of Maine for the Spring semester of 2015. This course will prepare us to teach English in early elementary classrooms (Pre-K to grade 3) on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We are looking for some financial support in order to make our travels possible!
From May 10th until May 31st, we will be examining the nature, role, purpose, and curriculum implemented in the early child education system on Isla Mujeres. We are excited and ready for our upcoming challenge to make a contribution to the education of these young children. The two of us will participate in a two and a half day training program upon our arrival on Isla. We will then be team teaching English to non-English speaking students for over 60 hours over the course of thirteen days spent in the classroom. All teaching will be observed, supervised and instructed by the director of the curriculum to ensure that the learning of each student is as continuous and substantial as possible. We plan to use the money we raise to cover traveling expenses, room accommodations at a youth hostel for twenty-one nights, an intensive National English Curriculum training course and one-on-one Spanish lessons.
We are both anticipating the challenges and rewards that will emerge from this adventure. While we will be staying on the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres, the main objective for this trip is to expand the possibilities for young children. We hope you consider donating as any amount is immensely appreciated. We can’t wait to share the stories of our travels with you all!
