The 8th annual Memphis Debate Summit is planned for June 22-26, 2015. We invite middle and high school students from all public, private, and parochial schools in the greater Memphis area to attend the summit, free of charge. With your support, we can continue to provide high quality academic instruction to students across Shelby County who are investing in their own future.
Debate experience provides teens in the Memphis area with an opportunity to develop a key success skill for any profession. By attending the summit, students learn about debate theory, research, various debate formats, and how to prepare for the National Forensics League topic for the upcoming year.
Our students learn to shape their own thoughts and linguistic abilities on debate topics including: the 2015 Memphis mayoral election and our local economy, crime prevention, domestic violence, voter’s rights, ISIS, US Government Policy, terrorism, the 2016 presidential election, and debate theory and research.
About Memphis Debate Summit
The Memphis Debate Summit for 2015 continues the work delivered by the Shelby Debate Society (SDS) in Greater Memphis for seven years. Formerly known as the Memphis Debate Urban League, we inspired inner city and suburban youth with the power of rhetoric. Studies show that students who participate in debate in high school do better than those who do not in completing both high school and college. We hold a firm belief that skilled critical thinkers, rhetoricians, and orators shape the world around us.
Students will participate in instruction from expert debaters from the University of Pittsburgh, Wiley College, Middle Tennessee State University, DePaul University, The Atlanta and Chicago Urban Debate Leagues, the University of Memphis, and the University of Louisville.
Students will finish the program with a better understanding of debate theory, next year’s National Forensics League debate topic on reducing the U. S. domestic surveillance programs, performance debate, and public forum debate. Attendees will increase their ability to find their voice on key local, national and global topics.
