Medical Volunteer, Papua New Guinea

Donation protected
My name is Jennifer Ridenton. I am currently a 4th year medical student in Peninsula Medical School, UK. Before medical school, I knew I wanted to be in the position to give medical care to those most in need, and to bring healthcare to the most underserved countries around the globe. I even travelled to India at the age of 18 to be a medical volunteer in the hospitals there. This was the catalyst of my aspiration to become a 'doctor without borders', and treat those less fortunate overseas.

As part of my final year of my medical training, I have a wonderful opportunity to undertake an 8-week hospital placement overseas. This opportunity will broaden my knowlege and experience of healthcare in resource poor settings, and will allows me to take the skills and knowledge that we have acquired in the UK to overseas nations that are in desperate need of medical aid.

After researching various hospitals and countries around the world that are in need of medical aid and volunteers, I have proposed to volunteer in Kavieng General Hospital. Kavieng is a small provincial hospital with 104 beds and only 10 resident doctors that serve a population of 200,000 people. The hospital is resource poor, lacks basic medial equipment, and most of all manpower. Whilst I am there l will be volunteering in the General Medical Ward and in the Outpatients Department, assisting in history taking, examinations, and the general day-to-day care of patients.

Alongside my medical degree I work in the local NHS hospital as a healthcare assistant on the wards, assiting in the day-to-day care of patients in an attempt to raise money for this placement. Unfortunately, the money I have raised does not cover all the expenses of my medical elective, such as airfare, visas, travel insurance medications and emergency money.

I could use any help to ensure the success of my medical elective placement, to enable me to help and learn from others in Papua New Guinea before returning to the UK to complete my medical training.

If you cannot donate, simply sharing this page will enable me to reach this goal, and to become a 'Doctor without Borders'.
