MC for Ecuador

Donation protected
This fundraiser is organized by the staff at the Maryville College Center for International Education and the students who traveled throughout Ecuador in January 2016 (MC in Ecuador ). We're raising money within the MC community (students, staff, faculty, and family and friends of MC) to support the Ecuadorian Red Cross, which has been on the ground in country helping victims and their families since the earthquake hit the coast on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Our fundraiser goes through Thursday, May 5 2016 with a goal of $1,000 total.

What happend and why it's important to donate:
On the evening of April 16, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador. The death toll is currently above 650. An additional 12,500 are injured and 130 are missing. Strong tremors and aftershocks continue to "shake" the country. If that's not bad enough, 7,000 buildings have been impacted, while 26,000 people have been living in shelters. In total, the damage has been estimated at $2-$3 billion. The is the worst quake to affect the country in seven decades. Considering that Ecuador's economy was already struggling because of international oil prices (leading industry in Ecuador), this disaster has and will continue to have a severe impact on the people.

The Ecuadorian Red Cross has had volunteers and staff providing aid to victims since soon after the earthquake hit. Through the help of our local East Tennessee Red Cross chapter, we're able to donate cash and the funds we raise through Go Fund Me directly to the chapter in Ecuador (Cruz Roja Ecuatoriana).

Why this is an important cause for the MC in Ecuador students

"Ecuador is important to me because it reminded me of who I really am: I'm adventurous, free-spirited, and in love with nature. I met so many amazing people in Ecuador who I'll remember forever." - Kristin Kimberlain , Maryville College '16

"Ecuador holds a special place in my heart! The memories and experiences I felt in ecuador I will never forget. The people and culture are so accomidating and beautiful and it hurts me to know that people are suffering and beauty has been destroyed there. Please donate to help heal and and restore ecuador in all of its glory and magic!" - Halle Hill, Maryville College '17

Donating process:
The program coordinator at the Center for International Education will be personally responsible for withdrawing the funds and then giving all that we receive from Go Fund Me to the local Red Cross, who will then give the donation to the Ecuadorian Red Cross. To be completely transparent, two students will be with her while she requests a check from Go Fund Me, will go with her to deposit the money, watch her write a check, and accompany her to the local chapter in Knoxville. Photos will be taken at each step of the way and uploaded to this page. We are also accepting cash this week. Students will sit in the lobby of Pearsons to collection online and cash donations.

We hope you choose to donate! Every bit counts.
