The McClellan Memorial Scholarships

Donation protected

Honoring the memory of Mr. David J. McClellan, my father, and Deweese D. McClellan, my grandmother, a total of fifteen $500 scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend Jacksonville State University, in Alabama.

Mr. McClellan was born and raised in the Mill Village area of Jacksonville, AL in 1939. He proudly attended and graduated from Jacksonville High School. And attended Jacksonville State to pursue an English degree.

He served in the United States Army, and was an employee at the Fort McClellan post office for over 32 years. After 'retirement', he worked part time at the Fort McClellan Credit Union in Anniston, AL.

Mr. McClellan passed away on September 18, 2011, after a short battle with lung cancer. He remained a steadfast Gamecock fan throughout his life, passing on that love to the rest of his family.

Some of his final gifts and letters of support came from the Gamecock basketball team and Coach James Green. Long time JSU baseball coach Rudy Abbott encouraged him during his sickness, and attended his memorial service after his passing.

Mrs. Deweese D. McClellan was a native of Jasper, AL. Born on December 31, 1915, she came to Calhoun County in 1937 to attend Jacksonville State University (then known as Jacksonville State Teachers College).

Mrs. McClellan raised eight children after a short teaching career in Jacksonville. She was married to the late Thomas (Jack) McClellan for 51 years. She also helped raise her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them along the way.

She always fondly recalled 'the college', as she called it, in many stories she told. One of her favorites being on how she arrived at Jacksonville State via covered wagon with 3 other ladies, from Walker Co, AL.

Mrs. McClellan passed away on December 29, 2012 of natural causes, at the grand age of 96 years old. She was one of the oldest living graduates of Jacksonville State at the time of her death.

In honor of their love for Jacksonville State University, the McClellan Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up, to offer prospective JSU students, the opportunity to further their education.

They were stout proponents of a worthwhile education, and making the most of what it can offer.

We are proposing a total of 15 scholarships, one per year, worth $500 each, to be awarded to worthy candidates. If no one applies for scholarship during a calendar school year, any scholarship monies will be rolled over, until all is exhausted.

We feel this is an incredible way, to remember these incredible people. By assuring another generation of Gamecocks, get the opportunity to succeed.

We hope you will consider joining our family in honoring the memory of these wonderful people, and their devotion to Jacksonville State University, by making a donation today.
