In her own words:

Hello, my name is Maia. I am a 15 year old cellist. I play almost entirely in the Irish and Scottish traditions.

This year I competed at the St. Louis Fleadh Cheoil Irish Traditional Music competition. With a composite score of 90%, I placed first in my category, qualifying me to compete in the All-Ireland competition (Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann)!

I have always wanted to travel overseas. Now, I have a very strong reason to go to Ireland, but I don't yet have the means - so I've created a 4 part action plan.

1. First, I got my first job - a dream job! - working at a science and art summer camp with creative and experiential kids! Woo! I am putting all my earnings at this job towards my Ireland trip.
2. Second, I am going to be busking in the city on weekends to both practice in front of people, and to add whatever donations people generously share with me to the Fleadh fund.
3. I am holding a Bollywood Birthday Bash and Fundraiser on my 16th birthday! There, I'll play my competition pieces, perform several dances with my Bollywood dance troupe and then, participants will get to take a class with my peeps at Bollywood Dance Scene: Twin Cities.
4. And lastly, I am coming to you and asking for some help. Friends and family who can't be at the fundraiser - please share what you can. I want to go to Ireland and compete - and then spend some time experiencing the culture and music in situ!

I've been immersed in traditional Celtic culture since I was born. My mom played recordings of puirt à beul (mouth music) all the time, and I grew up hearing Altan, Danú, and Lunasa, as well as many outstanding local musicians. I studied Irish dance for 5 years. I've been singing Irish songs with my Papa (an instructor at the Center for Irish Music) since I was four, and I joined an ensemble at the Center for Irish Music shortly after I started cello. I've studied "˜Gaelscoil' Irish and plan to take classes in Donegal Irish with Dáithi Sproule.

I'll be taking lots of pictures and updating my Facebook whenever I can, and I plan to blog about my experience when I return.
