Aerial Drone Photography FAA Case

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Kevin Nelson and Im trying to put a case together against the FAA in order to get approval for an aerial drone photography business I am starting. My attorney's fee is 2500$ and on top of the drone, camera and computer equipment it seems just out of reach.

I have spent many years saving money in order to complete my dream of receiving my pilots license. When I finished that adventure, in early 2013, I was so proud of myself and glad to have crossed another item off my bucket list. Since then, aviation has taken a back seat in my life. That is, until now. I have purchased a high-end quadcopter (DJI Phantom 2) along with cameras and a new computer for editing. I have a huge amount of respect for aviation and for the FAA and want to tackle this in the right manner.

Currently, in the United States, it is illegal to use a drone/UAV for any commercial purposes whatsoever. No photos or videos that are taken with a UAV are able to be used in any way for profit.  Under section 333 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 one is able to submit a petition for exemption to these laws. This is precisely what I am trying to accomplish: To submit a petition pleading my case. These petitions are long, dry and very hard to understand. However, with the addition of an attorney's services I might better be able to overcome this obstacle. Because of my previous schooling, knowledge in the field, and multiple letters of recommendation from teachers and pilots I have flown with, I have been able to get a reduced fee from my attorney; but there is still a long way to go and I need your help.

My short term goal is to concentrate on basic aerial photography, videography, and basic flying and safety procedures. I have recently done a mock promotional video for a local park for my hometown's Parks and Recreation Department. Most of my initial clients (I suspect) will be those in real estate, solar energy, resorts, golf courses, etc. I mention these examples simply because I am interested in working with these industries; but truly, the list of possibilities is endless.

My longterm goal, besides starting a successful business of my own, is to eventually get a job dealing with UAVs. Perhaps even with a company that doesn't yet exist. I know there will be a great use for them in the future. For example, working within land conservation  or surveying of some sort would be really fulfilling. There are also opportunites available using aerial drones/UAVs in groundbreaking therapies designed for helping children with certain types of learning disabilities, such as autism. These therapies rely on the theory that flying in the first person view (FPV) can relieve stress, bring excitement, new experiences, as well as the joy of autonomy. Being able to make a living doing valuable work like this is my dream.

I would like to thank you all for taking time to read this. Please help by contributing to my cause. By doing so, you will be sharing in a part of history. I know this is a long shot and even after submitting my case to the FAA nothing is guaranteed.

And as my friend once said...

"Life is short guys, don't let your dreams escape you, even if you feel like a chihuahua on the inside, be a warrior.

Thanks so much!!!
