Bartending School - Support My Mom

Donation protected
My name is Shane Dobson, I'm 23 years old. I currently live with my mother, and have for the past two years. Her husband, my father, died last May. He fought cancer off and on for over 13 years, I'm happy to have had the time I did with him. I was also lucky, I had lost a job when he was in bad shape, only several weeks before he ultimately died. Then about two weeks before his death, I got a great job! Working as a dispatcher at 911, a county government job. I was so happy that he could be proud of me. About two weeks after I got the job, he passed away on May 31st. I felt lucky again to have a job that gave me a full week off due to the circumstances... whereas when I told my previous job that it was bound to happen soon they said I could only take the 3 holidays I was given yearly, and would have to work them when they actually came around.

Anyways, I got back to work, learning to be a dispatcher. Let me tell you, that job isn't for everybody. Actually, it's for the very few. You should always have a ton of respect for the people that answer 911. Unfortunately, I was let go from that job. I was not able to learn quick enough and handle all of the chaos that was entailed. Don't get me wrong, I worked hard, and was never late. My boss said he would give me an excellent reference.

Well, I haven't found another job since. I've been unemployed since early September 2015. I've been scrounging up money on ebay to help pay my expenses, and my lovely mother has helped me a ton as well.

What I've recently discovered is something called the professional bartending schools of America. When I was 16 or 17 I was in a restaurant looking at a bartender who looked really happy. My mom noticed him too and said I should do that. I told her that I thought it would be something I would really enjoy.

I'll be honest, since my father died I haven't found joy out of anything. I've had a hard time in multiple different areas and I'm putting a hard time on my mother as well. But, I really do think that I would enjoy this, even 7 years after that initial thought. I've worked in retail plenty, and I love making customers happy. I also like the atmosphere of (most) bars and clubs. If people are having a good time, I'm having a good time. Regardless of if I drink or not, which I rarely do.

So what I'm raising this money for is to go to bartending school, and getting a job as a bartender. Hopefully the job will be close to home. That way I can help my mother by making up some of the money she lost when her husband and my father died that she got from him to help pay bills. Even if it isn't close to home, I'll still be able to help her substantially just by supporting myself completely, and sending her what I can spare each month for her bills.

As of this very moment, I'm not positive how much the bartending course costs. But from my research I expect it could be as low as 200 dollars up to 600 dollars. Probably closer to the 600 dollar mark.

Update: The School costs 795 dollars. Still Feasible under the goal I have set.

The bartending school is not in my home town. Not close. I will have to travel, and stay for 1 to 2 weeks.
I also have a insurance bill due to complications with the ACA for this month. I owe 180 dollars on it, and that is going to prolong how long it will take for me to be able to accomplish this goal. Though, I have canceled it effective the end of January. I still have to pay that bill though.

After a quick look at some weekly hotel rates, I see they can average out to be close to 300 dollars a week!

So here is how I will use the money.

600 for Bartending School
600 for housing during that time.
200 to help me pay my one time medical bill.
300 for gas I will be going to KC, MO. 5 1/2 hours away.
300 for food and amenities during that time
400 for unforseen things and also after the course is complete, to sustain me until I get on my feet in a proper job. Though from what I understand, this school helps you find jobs, and many places go to them to find bartenders.

So:
600
600
200
300
300
400+
----------
That's 2,400 dollars altogether.

I need these funds as soon as possible. I can't wait any longer to not have a career that I can stay in for a long time and make a livable wage.

It means a lot to me, because I need to help my mother out. Her and my father have both done so much for me and my siblings growing up, she really deserves to be able to not have to worry about money so much. I want to help her. She isn't able to go to sleep at night because she worries about losing the house or not being able to afford anything besides the bare necessities. For dinner tonight, we ate a deer roast. From a deer that I hunted. She got sad, and said "I feel like soon the only things we will be able to afford to eat is what you can catch and hunt, and what I can grow."

Any help to achieve my goal will fill me with joy. You will be helping a household stay together. You'll help a widow see her child doing something he enjoys and providing her support. There are no words to describe how thankful I would be. And I can't imagine if I find the success I'm looking for here, how my mom would feel. She would be shocked and awed.

Around 2,400 dollars is what it would cost for me to achieve a career in a field I actually have passion for. Right now it seems unreachable. I will turn almost anywhere to help my mother right now though.

Even if you don't donate, thank you for taking the time to read this. Some of it gets me a little emotional, the past 7 months have been the worst of my life. I take it in stride, I know it will eventually be good. This is the first time in my life though, that I feel like I actually know what I want to do with it.

Thank you,
Shane Dobson
