Austin is a 16 year old student. He started getting sick in early 2013. After many trips to several different doctors, he was finally diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in October 2013. Since then he has been hospitalized with extended stays 10 separate times. The nearest hospital that treats UC is in Milwaukee, which is 100 miles from his home.
There is no cure for UC, it can be treated with medication. At one time Austin was taking 20+ pills per day; however he has not responded to any of the medications available. In August of 2014 it was determined that there were no other medicinal routes left to try and he had to have his colon (the entire large intestine) removed. He had complications from this surgery and had to have 3 additional surgical procedures. He will need two additional surgeries inthe next 6 months.
The family does have health insurance, but do to the high copays, deductibles, traveling expenses back and forth to Milwaukee (gas, food & lodging) and the loss of work due to the extended hospital stays, the family is in a financial crisis.
