HLD EcuaExperience 2013

As a 19-year-old, third year undergraduate student at University of British Columbia, I felt that I have been an advocate of giving back to the local community. Past four years, I have contributed greatly to both our school and the community through multiple leadership programs and volunteer opportunities that mostly revolved around working at healthcare facilities, enhancing younger students' learning in several elementary schools throughout Vancouver, and leading new undergraduate students in transition through orientation programs at UBC. Even though I feel that I have been an integral member of the community and I enjoyed every moment of being a part in it, I felt that I have not done something super unique or extraordinary and soon, I realized that this summer is my last chance to do something that would really jump out of my page while still in my 10's.

Help, Learn & Discover (HLD) EcuaExperience was able to provide me with this unique and fascinating opportunity that I sought for. The reason why HLD EcuaExperience grabbed my immediate attention among all other oversea volunteer programs, is because it, not only provide the students with oversea volunteering, but also allow the students to learn and view the culture from the inside and discover the beautiful country while reflecting upon myself and seeing the world with a purpose.
Let me tell you a little about what HLD EcuaExperience is all about. HLD EcuaExperience is an innovative organization that was founded 8 years ago in Vancouver, Canada. This program allows the students to "Help those less fortunate, learn about what it takes to develop a volunteer project abroad, and discover the diversity of Ecuador while exploring the country".

Every year, around 100 students from universities in Canada and United States, fundraise and use every single penny from the fundraiser to purchase equipment and all the materials needed to build houses in rural villages of Ecuador. Normally, around 100 students travel to Ecuador over five-months period and help finance and build homes for 20 underprivileged families. Keep in mind that it costs approximately $5000 to build one house and last year, around $110,000 was collected through student fundraising. 100% of your contribution is guaranteed to go towards building homes for these families. IF there is extra money left, all of the money goes directly to the funding of healthcare/surgery program in Ecuador. These houses aren't just bricks of walls, but a way to create a better livelihood and more promising future by providing the families with safety and protection, and a way to create a strong community.

Think about it. An average person spends $10-20 for one meal. If you could open up your heart and give up that one meal and decide to do something larger, you are definitely contributing to positively changing someone's life on the other side of the hemisphere. Now, doesn't that feel absolutely rewarding? Make a contribution. Help us. "Pay it forward".
