Study Abroad: Learn Korean

Donation protected
I have just been accepted to study at one of the top universities in South Korea!  Korea University.
*This has since been extended to a year long program.

I will be there for an academic year, and in my spare time plan to share my experience with … well anyone who is interested to see.  Since the beginning of this journey I have documented the events, good, bad and entertaining . I know the K-pop bug has bit a lot of people, but it goes deeper than that for me. I have a personal tie to the history and I will be there to study the language and hopefully learn more about the culture.

How did this start?
A few years ago I began working with a Korean exchange student (now one of my closest and most supportive friends) and he suggested I learn the Korean alphabet, Hangeul because I liked some Korean music and asked about some lyrics.  From that introduction I began learning about the language and its origin in the 15th century presented by King Sejong. **shown below

When I graduate from university I plan to move to South Korea and be an English Teacher. I am hoping to be the kind of teacher that the children want to see and are excited to go to. I want my students to be happy and enjoy learning, because it is not something many of them get the opportunity to do. I would like make their days better. My influence may be small, but you never know what that impact may be later.

I love South Korea and this is my dream, I’ve never had one before. This is not an experience I ever thought I would have, and I plan to make it the best experience possible. This is something that I would one day like to be able to pay it forward. But for now, I need to be able to make it through my study abroad and graduate. Just like with every other aspect of my life. I will do what needs to be done to succeed.

Now for the F.A.Q.
1. Why do you need my money?
I am a full time student on financial aid and work two part time jobs to help make ends meet at home. That is about all I can do, make ends meet. There isn’t much in the way of extra money.  The cost of the program is around: $18,600. *

2. Then why are you even considering going to South Korea?
It is a requirement for my TESOL certification through the college. I must take a language course and have what is called a culture credit. That basically means experiencing another culture in another country. My university doesn’t offer the Korean language, so it just makes sense to do it this way.

3. What is the money going to?
I am guessing this is what you really want to know. The money will go anything that my financial aid (and hopefully scholarship) doesn’t take care of such as air fare and food costs. It may also go for things like school supplies, bedding for the dorm, bathroom supplies and unexpected necessities of daily life.

*According to my program director here is the break down, just to keep everything transparent.
