For the past ten years, Lauren has been a Special Olympics GB athlete with the South East Ski Group.
Skiing for Special Olympics GB allows Lauren to learn new skills and keeps her fit and health. Lauren’s social skills improve too as she meets new friends at each event, learning that there are “other people similar to her”.
Lauren has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Alpine Skiing competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, one of the biggest events in the Special Olympic global calendar which will attract over 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from over 110 countries. Lauren considers this to be the highlight of her life and she hopes to win some races.
Lauren has received two prestigious Jack Petchey awards and achieved a silver arts award for Dance with Laban.
For the athletes, going to the Games is not only about participating in their chosen sport: it’s about meeting athletes from around the world, making new friends, having fun, daring, improving their health and challenging preconceptions about people who have an intellectual disability.
