Author-historian Laurel A. Rockefeller is one of the most gifted writers you will ever meet. Laurel has a special gift for taking the most complicated data and translating that so that anyone, no matter how old or young, no matter how excellent or poor the education, can understand it. The US government won't give it to her because despite her challenges, Laurel stayed in school, attended university (graduating in the top 3% of her class at the University of Nebraska), and worked hard. For that, the US government considers her only MODERATELY disabled -- and won't give her any help, despites applications for assistance. The State of Pennsylvania won't help her beyond housing and food either because she lived a life of moral integrity instead of sleeping around and birthing baby after baby like so many people do. There's no cash assistance for her telephone, for her life-saving migraine medicine (not covered by medicaid because they are doctor prescribed OVER THE COUNTER medicines), her bird food, her everyday little things without which we cannot live and stay in our homes.
Laurel is the most moral and responsible person you can know. Her work isn't written for the quick buck or quid. She doesn't pander and pimp herself out. She writes. She researches. She teaches. She brings history to life. And for all her hardships, Laurel is the most generous of people -- giving away her possessions readily instead of trying to sell what she has that she doesn't need. Laurel is too honest to be a great salesperson; it is far better to give from poverty than lie.
And now she needs help from you.
There are two important ways to help Laurel. One of course is to donate to this fundraising campaign -- any amount will help and there are some nice thank you gifts if you can afford $25 or $100.
But the other is to simply purchase Laurel's books on Amazon, Smashwords, iBookstore, and Barnes/Noble and leave reviews. The first is a hand out to pay her basic bills in July and August so she's not thrown out of her home, doesn't loose her beloved cockatiels who are her only companions, and doesn't go without her medicine.
But the second is the hand up empowering Laurel to get back on her own feet, Laurel needs both right now. She needs you to believe that the world is a better place for her being in it -- and it is.
