Kalamazoo Curling Club Ice Stuff

Donation protected
Since we started curling in Kalamazoo back in March of 2008, we have continually played our sport on less than ideal ice. We would slide our stones down the sheet only to see them slide out of bounds or snake their way down the ice, following the zamboni's path. We would often hear our club members dream that one day we would be able to play on dedicated ice... one day...

While we're not headed to our own dedicated facility, we are excited to announce that the Kalamazoo Curling Club is making a giant step in that direction for the 2015-16 curling season. We have the opportunity to manage one of the rinks at Wings Stadium as if it were our own. We will be able to run nightly leagues... daytime leagues... Saturday morning youth leagues! It's all happening much quicker than we could have imagined!

We want to offer our members — and our guests! — the best ice that we can. The hitch is that we will need equipment which we do not currently have in order to provide that ice. We need to come up with some cash, and we need to do that quickly.

We've set a goal of $30,000. We think we can do it, but we do need help. Here's a partial list of things that we will need to acquire before we can start curling in the Fall:

Ice Scraper - Approximate cost is $12000. This is the main piece of equipment that we will be using to maintain the ice. After every third draw (so almost daily) we will be scraping the ice to take the pebble off. This allows us to keep the ice level and reapply new pebble coats without increasing the depth of the ice as the season goes on.

Ice Scraper Blades - Approximate cost is $1000 per blade (we need 3) - It is recommended to have an extra blade per 2 sheets.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filtering System - This will cost somewhere in the ball park of $5000. Clean water make a lot of difference. We'd love to see the difference.

Nipper - Approximate cost $1600 - This is the tool that we use right after we have pebbled the ice. It "nips" the tips of the pebble off and prepares the ice to play. It does the same thing as when we "run the rocks" except it doesn't wear the rocks down and it does a much better job.

New Pebble Heads - $300 - our existing ones are old and damaged.

Flooding Hose - $285 Needed to do floods

Roll out Mesh Sheets - $1000 - This would be in place of "Painting" all the markings on the sheet. They roll out and we don't have the hassle of painting.

Hacks (Removable) - $1500 - These will be able to be pulled out of the ice to allow for easier access to scrape the sheets.

Boot Cleaner - automatic - $1400 - This is a device that rotates and cleans off shoes to make sure the ice is very clean.

Security System - $3000 - We will add security to our entrance that will allow "Platinum" and league managers access to the club at anytime.

Thermostat - PRICE UNKNOWN - We need to have a thermostat added to the chiller so we can control the temperature of the ice.

Reconditioning Rocks - Approx $3000 - Now that we will have a good sheet of ice to play on, we are looking at "Reconditioning" the rocks. This helps them to run better and helps to give more curl on them. Our rocks are old, and really need it.

As you can see, the costs really add up quickly. In order to start off our next season, these items will need to be purchased very quickly. If you are a fan of curling, or love someone who is a fan of this great game, please consider helping the Kalamazoo Curling Club develop a great place to play this game in Southwest Michigan.
