Metthananda Kuruppu Memorial Fund

A memorial fund has been established for the family of Metthananda Chandra Kuruppu, the 52-year-old owner of the Pick N’ Stop convenience store (800 block of S. Major – Beaumont) who was fatally shot by two armed men during a robbery on Wednesday. As the Beaumont Police Department searches for the assailants, the community is rallying around the family of a man remembered for his hard work, dedication and compassionate heart for all those he encountered.

The Kuruppu family left their native Sri Lanka in 2006, hoping to create a better life for their family in a land of opportunity. Arriving in Beaumont in 2008, Metthananda became a small business owner and, with his cherished wife, Asoka, selflessly dedicated his life to establishing an admirable legacy for his family in Southeast Texas. Led by their industrious patriarch, Metthananda encouraged his two daughters to pursue excellence, both personally and academically. The accomplishments of his precious children were numbered among his greatest achievements.

Metthananda’s oldest daughter, Dulani Kuruppu, 23, is a civil engineering major at Lamar University with a 4.0 GPA and, youngest daughter Hasini Kuruppu, 19, also maintains a 4.0 GPA at Lamar University as she pursues a degree in computer science. Hasini Kuruppu was recently awarded the prestigious I Have a Dream Scholarship, founded by local humanitarian Regina Rogers.

Without family and many friends in Southeast Texas, the Kuruppu family must rely on the loving embrace and support of the community they’ve sought to serve. To carry forth Metthananda Kuruppu’s dream for his family, a memorial fund has been created to cover the family’s expenses and further the future their beloved husband and father worked so hard to provide.

In support of the Kuruppu family, please call [phone redacted] to find out how you can donate to the Metthananda Kuruppu Memorial Fund, established through Capital One, or GoFundMe to contribute.

Detectives are asking any person with information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 409.833.TIPS. Callers do not need to give their names and, if the information leads to the identity and arrest of the men responsible for this capital murder, they will be eligible to receive a cash reward up to $1,000.
