Rites of Passage Program Support

Donation protected
We are asking for the support of our family, friends and community to help our girls complete their Bragorɔ (female rites of passage) in Takyiman, Ghana, West Africa.  Through Kompan Adepa, an organization and spiritual way of life dedicated to preserving and living the highest ideal of Akan-Bono culture, they began this process in January 2014 and have learned various skills and gained knowledge and wisdom on the  responsibilities of womanhood that will help prepare them for their future.  Our goal is to raise $5,500 to cover travel expenses, room and board as well as the necessary items needed to complete the 7 day Bragorɔ ceremonies/celebrations under the guidance of the Queen Mother of Takyiman, Ghana in the summer of 2016.  We plan to spend 2-3 weeks in Ghana which will allow our young ladies to experience the culture, be immersed in the Twi language and take tours to various locations.

The purpose of the Bragorɔ is to prepare young ladies for the roles and responsibilities of womanhood from an Akan perspective.  In Akan culture (and most indigenous cultures) each member of society has a role that helps keep balance and order.  The roles of women, men, elders and children create the foundation of our families, communities and nation.  The women are the first teachers of the children, and through this transmission of knowledge it shapes our future and the communities we live in.  It is also important that we live with a sense of purpose and fulfill our destinies.  We must always do our best to make our mark on society, leave a legacy, and make our communities (and the world) a better place than how we found it.

The development and preparation of our young girls for the responsibility of womanhood is essential, especially in today’s hyper-sexualized society where females are objectified and not taught often enough how to be the embodiment of respect, dignity and honor. Through Kompan Adepa we believe that it is our duty to ensure that our young ladies have a strong foundation rooted in our cultural heritage and wisdom from our Ancestors that will help them navigate and stand strong as women of African descent in a western society.

We plan to document our trip to Ghana in order to share this wonderful experience with our family, friends and community via the Kompan Adepa web site, Facebook page and will hold a special community event in honor of our young ladies as they embark on their journey towards womanhood.

For more information about the Bragorɔ visit the Kompan Adepa web site at:  www.kompanadepa.org .

NOTE:  Any surplus of funds raised will go towards hosting an event for the community where a presentation will be made about the complete 3 year Bragorɔ process and the completion of this rites of passage in Ghana.  Photos and video will be used as medium for which to make this presentation.
Please allow 2-4 weeks for the delivery of your thank you gifts.
