"Why I Read" Docu-series

When I was a kid, Literacy was always communicated to me as an important skill. Reading was promoted as a critical, engaging, and fun activity that tested your imagination and opened up the world around you. I could always turn to PBS and find a show that was as entertaining as it was educational. In the halls of my school and library were posters of celebrities and athletes promoting how fun it was to read.

Over the years I have witnessed how the importance of literacy and the fun of reading has not been communicated in the same way as when I was a child. I come across so many people who find reading to be this laborious and even humiliating task. I’ve watched my younger brother struggle to see how reading could be just as fun—if not more—as playing a video game.

Reading unlocks the dynamic world of your mind—it not only sharpens your critical thinking skills and helps you become a better writer, but it provides a playground for your imagination to run free. I wanted to figure out what happened to that aspect of reading and how we could change the way we talk about literacy. So I set off to begin filming a docu-series titled “Why I Read.” The purpose of the docu-series is to interview individuals in different career fields to get an understanding of why literacy is important toward the progression of their career and why reading is one the most critical and entertaining things one can do.

I currently have a few segments finished, but what I am asking for is an investment in this project. I would like to purchase equipment that will help me tell these compelling stories in a way that will spark the interest of people across this nation.

As a full-time college student who also works I have many financial responsibilities from my rent to my books. While I did save money to invest in a camera, it is the lights and audio that truly enhance the way audiences experience visual stories.

The money would go directly toward buying a proper lighting kit, one microphone, and one lens. Video is a medium that I am extremely passionate about. Upon graduating I plan to pursue a career in visual media. I have had the honor to intern for several different companies that have taught me critical lessons in making and editing quality videos.

Not only do I want to create something that is visually stimulating, but I want to use this medium to provide thought-provoking content in the media. I want to use my talents as a story-teller to always seach for and communicate truth.

I will be thankful for whatever contribution you are able to make toward my journey of exploring and communicating the importance of literacy. This equipment will not only help me in completing a quality documentary, but it will be instrumental in my further endeavors in film and video-making.
